the World Akhal-Teke Organization

WATO is now officially founded.

Maria Marquise Baverstock (Co-Director of Akhal-Teke UK Ltd) has now published her report on the conference in English and you can either download it here or read in on the Teke Talk blog. Please fill out the questionnaire if you want a voice in the formation of this new world organization.

Minutes will be posted in English on the Kara Kum Akhal-Tekes site from the meeting as well as complete lists of committee members Here is a summary of what has been posted so far:

The meeting took place in the Equiros Exhibition, Sokolniki Park in Moscow. Approximately 30 attendees from Russia, Central Asia, China, Euop and the USA voted for the foundation of WATO.

Chairman Alexander Klimuk of Stavropol Stud opened the meeting with a brief summary of the work with the breed since the publication of the first stud book to the foundation of the International Akhal-Teke Breeders Association (MAAK) in 1990. MAAK has not had a meeting in 7 years and can therefor be considered a non-existing organization that can be replaced with WATO.

The lack of a breeder’s association that can monitor and influence the present studbook and breed development management has had a negative influence on the breed and therefore we need to, today, form and international association.

The overall goals of WATO was presented by Alexander Klimuk and accepted by a majority of the meeting:

To create an open and unified system for registration and studbook keeping for the breed.
To create an open and unified system for the performance testing and evaluation of the breed in breed shows.
To educate the public about the breed.
To improve the image of the breed.

Membership categories was presented by Jessica Eile – Keith
There was a discussion whether national associations as well as owners of horses should be allowed as voting members.

The following members were nominated to the Executive Committee and were elected by the meeting:

1. Alexander Klimuk, Russia
2. Abdurakman Osmanov, Russia
3. Jessica Eile – Keith, USA
4. Jean de Bannes, France
